According to Wikipedia, Orion is a prominent constellation located on the celestial equator and visible throughout the world. And staying true to this meaning, Orion is slowly yet steadily making its mark in Pune with its food, drinks and interiors. (Just when you enter look at the top I say!)
Thanking Vaibhav for the invitation and patience and Abhishek for introducing us Puneites to a lovely tasting and some unique food. Let’s start with the tasting (and it’s a pretty long one so please bear with me?)
Three Mushroom Liquid, Crisp Air Dried Mushroom
Indian Spiced Pumpkin Veloute
Chicken Shorba (Authentic)
Sikpuri Tikki with Passionfruit Mayo
Country Style Maple Wings
Bangkok Style Chicken
Garlic bread with red onion jam
Orion Special Kebab
Pumpkin Ravioli with Thyme Butter
Chicken Ravioli with Pepper Pesto & Onion Ash
Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza
Veg and Non-Veg Naanza
Mezze Platter with Baba Ganush, Garlic Hummus & Beetroot Hummus
Starting with the soups, all three stood out in terms of presentation and flavour. From the creaminess of the mushroom soup to the velvety smoothness of the Pumpkin Veloute and the flavourful & authentic Chicken Shorba…everything was spot on. Also, please keep in mind that the Chicken Shorba is authentic from the Ahmednagar side. You’ll taste some difference but everything is worth it. Trust me!
Moving onto the starters, I couldn’t taste the Sikpuri Tikki with Passionfruit Mayo but the Makhmali Roll was the standout dish for me. I shall tell you about the others but this dish was beautiful. Stuffed paneer roll with foam on top this looks pretty in the picture and one of my favourite dishes of the night. Vegetarians, you have a splendid choice! The country-style maple wings were a tad bit too sweet and needed something to cut through the sweetness. The presentation of Bangkok Style Chicken was something different from what you see normally. Fried noodles and small chicken chunks. This could definitely be the dish you order for your next round of drinks! The Garlic bread with red onion jam will definitely give you a harmony of flavours with the savoury of the garlic bread and sweetness from the onions. Not my favourite but a likeable and a definite try for all the foodies out there! And lastly, the Orion Special Kebab is just a plate of authentic chicken kebabs with melted cheese on top and salad on the sides.
Entering the pasta department, it was great to say that the monotony of the fusilli, penne, shells and spaghetti was finally done away with at the Orion (for our tasting) but the ravioli missed the mark. With the pasta being too thick and the pumpkin taste being a bit weird for me, this one is a no from me. In fact, Abhishek had told us that this dish is either loved or hated, no in between, so there you go. The black lasagna definitely looks like a normal lasagna when served but when you dig into is when the black surprise is in it! The layers of chicken, cheese and black mushroom make up this dish and is a good attempt!
How did the traditional Italian dish, Pizza at the tasting? The Bbq Chicken, Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza, Non-Veg Naanza, all of them were cheesy, loaded with chicken pieces with a good pizza crust.
P.S. – Don’t forget to check out the way the Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza is served! It’s super fun!
The Mezze Platter with Baba Ganush, Garlic Hummus & Beetroot Hummus could be a popular way to start your meal just like they do in Turkey, Greece, Israel & Lebanon (read this on the internet). You’ll get a little taste of everything and suits a variety of diets as well.
Lastly, the desserts. Phew! The Shahi Tukda is served in a deconstructed way but I did not like this one and avoided it after my first bite but but but the standout was the Chocolate Cigars with Ice-Cream! Ordering this dish thrice literally makes you understand why this dish was loved so much!
